Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Physiotherapists and occupational therapists will be involved with people with SCI at different stages throughout their lifespan. Below are some useful resources for therapists involved in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. The outpatient team at the spinal cord injury centre and the SCI network can offer support and advice for therapists based in the community or other hospitals.

Acute management of SCI – non respiratory

The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre has produced an informative video about acute physiotherapy management for people with spinal cord injury.

Standing after SCI

Provision of standing equipment for people with spinal cord injury will vary, dependent on clinical need and local resources. For information about sourcing standing equipment for a patient in the community, it is advised to start with the local team or equipment stores.

MASCIP has produced a set of guidelines for standing after spinal cord injury, which can be found here. 

Sex and relationships after SCI

Bolt Burdon and Kemp have produced a range of resources discussing sex and relationships after SCI. The first webinar with Damian Smith on the Physical Side of Sex and Relationships.  The second webinar with a group of SCI Men discussing their experience of sex and relationships after a SCI. The third webinar with a partners of SCI Men discussing their experience of sex and relationships after a SCI. The fourth webinar with Michelle Donald, psychosexual therapist, touching on the other webinars and giving her take based on her vast experience.

Women and Men

Exercise

Exercise guidelines for adults with spinal cord injury were developed in 2018 by an international group of researchers, clinicians, organisations, and people with SCI. The video explains the guidelines and there are two posters demonstrating them, click on the posters to download them.
